One of my most recent (and favorite) purchases is the adorable dress I wore the other day for Mother’s Day / my birthday (see my last post). I love this dress for several reasons, but my favorite part of the dress is probably the full swing skirt hemmed to an adorable, flirty length. Which brings me to the topic of today’s post: Ladies, there is a fine line between flirty and slutty!
I know you know what I’m talking about, but here is a graphic I created to illustrate my point more clearly:
Maybe I am being overly conservative, but I think most people would agree that there is such a thing as a skirt or dress that is just too short! The most popular rule of thumb is to put your arms by your sides and see if your hem is longer than the edges of your fingertips; this is a good guide to know if your hem is an appropriate length. This is also known as “The Fingertip Rule.” Here are some celebrity examples:
As you can see, there is clearly a difference between an appropriate hem length and an inappropriate hem length. Personally, I like to make sure that I am comfortable in whatever I am wearing, but if I’m worried about a piece being too short or revealing too much, I like to pair it with tights or leggings. Just like Zooey Deschanel’s dress and tights ensemble in the second look, a pair of tights or nylons easily adds modesty and style.
